2006, January 1st - Animal Hospital Marks One Year, Serving a Need in the Brandon Community

Brandon, FL – They pulled out pieces of thread from an abdomen, one by one, for hours after “Ezzie” got hold of some sewing scraps.  They saved “Molly’s” life when she came down with pancreatitis.  They did it again, 2 weeks later after the Jack Russell Terrier was attacked by another dog.  And, they even saved “Goat” when her baby got stuck in her birth canal.

The doctors, technicians and support staff at Brandon Veterinary Specialists (BVS) have done some amazing things, since the facility opened just over one year ago.  Jenee Adkins of Riverview says she is fortunate Brandon Veterinary Specialists was around, when her Snowshoe Siamese cat took the lid off the garbage can to retrieve thread she had thrown away.  “What they do there is so unusual,” she says.  “Just the mere fact they can do this type of surgery is wonderful and so convenient.  Having BVS there, saved my kitty’s life.”

“If they weren’t there, I don’t know what I would have done,” says Amanda Righthouse of Brandon.  Her dog, “Molly” needed emergency surgery one night, after an angry dog took hold and wouldn’t let go.  “It’s very convenient from where I live.  They are an amazing facility.  They made a bad situation, good.  Everyone is so kind and gentle and willing to go above and beyond anything you could have asked for.”

“The reason we came to Brandon was because of requests from referring veterinarians for a specialty practice in this area,” according to Alicia Valle, Practice Manager for Brandon Veterinary Specialists.  Current specialties include: Surgery, Acupuncture, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Emergency and Critical Care.  The specialties will grow over time, based on need.  “It’s also improved the level of after hour care for the patients of the community,” adds Darryl Shaw, Hospital Adminstrator for the sister facility, Florida Veterinary Specialists, in Tampa.  “There’s nothing like it in the Brandon community.”

No doubt, a great need is being served for the pet community.  For Sean Morgan of Gibsonton, it meant the difference between life and death, after he discovered “Goat” lying around with a head sticking out of her birth canal.  “If the Brandon facility wasn’t there, she may have died.  I don’t think she would have made it much longer.”

Brandon Veterinary Specialists is located at 723 West Lumsden Rd., Brandon.  Construction will begin later this year on a brand new 6,000 square foot facility located at the northwest corner of Lumsden Rd. and Hilltop Drive.  They are affiliated with Florida Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center in Tampa.  For more information, go to www.brandonveterinaryspecialists.com or contact Kristen Levine at 727-480-8030.
