2005, May 12th - Nanuke’s Luck Takes a Good Turn—Emergency Fund Drive Begins

Neglected husky to have surgery to remove benign tumor—funds needed to cover costs.

Tampa, FL—On Thursday afternoon, May 12, Nanuke will undergo surgery at Florida Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center (FVS) to remove a large tumor from his neck.  Nanuke is the severely neglected husky that was confiscated Tuesday by police in a Tampa neighborhood.

Today, veterinarians at FVS determined the tumor to be benign and scheduled the dog’s surgery for tomorrow.  Nanuke’s temperament is gentle despite his lack of socialization and basic care from his previous living conditions.  The dog appeared comfortable and ate well today.

Animal Services of Hillsborough County has legal custody of Nanuke and today gave permission for FVS veterinarians and staff to proceed with treatment for the tumor removal. Doctors expect a good prognosis with surgery, however funds will need to be raised to cover costs.

“Animal Services has limited funds for cases like this,” explains Darryl Shaw, FVS hospital administrator, “Our Charitable Foundation has committed funds to cover part of the surgery, but we are launching an emergency fund drive to raise the remainder of costs.  We’re asking the public to make donations to the FVS Charitable Foundation.”  Any additional proceeds remaining will be used for future crisis pet care.

The FVS Charitable Foundation is a non-profit 501-C III organization that provides emergency funds for pets in medical crisis.  While the program is intended to help responsible pet owners facing a medical emergency with their pet; the Foundation has agreed to commit available funds to help Nanuke, but must raise more money to cover the extensive medical treatment he will require.

Nanuke also tested positive for heartworm disease.  He will be treated for the condition at either FVS or Animal Services once the tumor is removed.

Donations toward Nanuke’s care are tax deductible and can be made to: “Nanuke” c/o FVS Charitable Foundation, 3000 Busch Lake Blvd., Tampa, FL 33614; or contact Darryl Shaw at (813) 933-8944.

Information about the FVS Charitable Foundation is available online at www.fvs.com.
