TAMPA, FL, December 1, 2004 - Florida Veterinary Specialists & Cancer Treatment Center (FVS), the 24-hour critical care facility that serves as the primary emergency and referral center for the Tampa Bay area, today announced its expansion into the Brandon market with the opening of Brandon Veterinary Specialists (BVS).
BVS has leased a 2,000-square-foot facility in Oak Park Plaza, 723 West Lumsden Road, and will initially provide after-hours, weekend and holiday emergency and critical care. “We have been serving an increasing number of veterinarians and their patients in Brandon over the past few years,” said FVS founder and director Neil Shaw, DVM, ACVIM. “It has now reached the point where the volume of patients we are seeing from this growing area calls for a more convenient location tailored to the specific needs of this market. “ Dr. Shaw said that the opening of BVS signified a commitment to help Brandon’s veterinary community meet the needs of its patients in the most professional and practical manner possible.
Dr. Shaw said that the decision to open this second location was based on in-depth discussions with almost every one of the 30 veterinary clinics located in the Brandon market. “Veterinary specialists are an extension of your family veterinarian,” said Dr. Shaw. “The patients we see are referred to us, either for after-hour emergency care when their family veterinarian’s office is closed, or for specialized care. So almost everything that we do, including where we locate our offices and which services we provide, are the result of the suggestions of our colleagues.” He said that almost every veterinarian he had spoken with assured him there was an immediate need for these services and was eager to have them more readily available.
While BVS will only provide emergency after-hours care initially, Dr. Shaw said that the ultimate goal is for the new facility to eventually offer as many specialty services as the Brandon market demands. “We will grow right along with the needs of the veterinarians we serve,” said Dr. Shaw. “We are already looking at options for a permanent location with the space we anticipate needing during the next several years.”
BVS is a satellite office of FVS, the largest private veterinary practice in the southeastern United States. Founded in 1996, FVS has grown steadily as pet owners’ devotion to their pets, and interest in providing their animal companions with a level of medical care comparable to that for humans, continues to grow. Today, more than 24,000 patients are seen each year. The staff of more than 120 people includes 34 full-time veterinarians, two part-time veterinarians and 84 support staff including 35 certified veterinary technicians. The main areas of care include: Avian and Exotics, Behavioral Medicine, Critical Care, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology/Radiation Oncology, Ophthalmology, Radiology and Surgery.
