2005 April 4th - Professionals Train to Save Man’s Best Friend

Tampa, FL  -- They sniff out the bad guys.  They save people from burning buildings.  They even search and rescue a lost child or disoriented hiker.  In the line of duty, professional working dogs put their lives on the line, with each and every assignment.  But, when it comes to their emergency care, in the field, who can they turn to?

K-9 Down is a highly specialized program designed for professional working dog handlers.

Police officers, firefighters, medics, search and rescue teams and military dog handlers, across Tampa Bay and beyond, will participate in a two day event, April 16-17, to train them to save man’s best friend in an emergency.

Canine use has come to the foreground in recent years with events like September 11 and natural disasters across the globe.  That’s why the Florida Veterinary Specialists Charitable Foundation felt compelled to provide such a unique program.   “It’s needed,” says Dr. Neil Shaw, FVS Medical Director.  “Without a doubt, with the increasing need for canines in the field with anti terrorism measures and security, it is something that was needed.”

The course will be taught by board certified veterinary specialists from Florida Veterinary Specialists and University of Florida Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.  Participation is by invitation only.  Guests will learn everything from gunshot and burn wound treatment to fluid therapy and poisoning.  “This course is unique.  It’s not general care.  Rather than general first aid, it’s a very focused presentation for specific circumstances,” says Shaw.

The course will provide numerous visual opportunities for media.   The media is invited to see first hand, the demonstrations with actual dogs, including:  bandaging, oxygen administration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, transport techniques and much more.

K-9 Down takes place Saturday April 16 (8a.m.–5p.m.) and Sunday April 17 (8a.m.–1p.m.).  It will be located at Florida Veterinary Specialists and Cancer Treatment Center, a state of the art 24-hour specialty referral and emergency practice in Tampa.  The address is: 3000 Busch Lake Blvd.
