Our Commitment: Help Pets

1. Cure Canine Lymphoma

Canine lymphoma -- the most common form of cancer in dogs -- is treatable.

If detected early, dogs can enjoy a year or two or more with their families. While treatable in early phases, treatment for canine lymphoma has made limited progress in the past two decades.

Frankie's Friends wants to help change that by coordinating Cure Canine Lymphoma, a national campaign of education and treatment for lymphoma. The objectives are to

    • raise public awareness of the potential for successful early treatment;
    • provide free care for dogs enrolled in clinical programs of promising new treatments; and
    • assist with heavily discounted care for dogs with lymphoma whose families cannot afford treatment.

2. Hope Fund: Grants for Families

Few alternatives exist for the large number of pets from otherwise loving and responsible families who simply are unable to pay for unexpected illnesses. Your gift assists families with substantial financial need whose pets have a good prognosis for recovery to a normal quality of life.

3. Cures for Pet Diseases

Your gift to Frankie's Friends will support clinical investigation of other pet diseases and treatments by promoting links between the investigators seeking new answers and the large numbers of patients who would benefit from that knowledge.

4. The Guest Cottages

There is no better medicine than a familiar touch, especially for a loved one sick and far from home. Specialized veterinary care can be a life-saver, and hospital staff offer tender and expert care. But it is not like home, and for pets' families who travel long distances, it can be a hardship to visit.

Guest Cottages will fill the gap. Families of pets who are critically ill or require extended hospital stays may qualify to stay in a comfortable cottage located right next to the hospital. The first Guest Cottage will be built near Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa.

5. K-9 Down

Donations also support community education efforts such as K-9 Down, a two-day course in advanced first aid and emergency procedures for handlers of working military, police and search/rescue dogs. K-9 Down was developed to address the unique set of risks canine teams encounter in their work.

What is Frankie's Friends history?

Frankie's Friends Charitable Pet Foundation was founded in 1999 to help pets, especially those with cancer, by Dr. Neil Shaw and associates at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa. When founded, our name was the Veterinary Cancer Foundation. The foundation is tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (EIN 59-3581823).

We became Frankie's Friends when our name was changed in June 2008.

Who is Frankie?

Frankie DeBartolo was a beautiful greyhound, rescued from dog racing and cherished by her family. Frankie's Friends is named in honor of the spirit and vitality of this special dog. She died in 2007 from complications of heart disease and cancer.
