We are a non-profit foundation dedicated to finding cures and saving pets with cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

We promote

  • Better treatment of pet cancers and other diseases,
  • Better access to veterinary care for pets, and
  • Better support for the families who love them.

We fund

  • Free treatment for qualifying pets with canine lymphoma, the most common canine cancer. No qualifying pet is denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay.
  • Efforts to find cures for pets with catastrophic diseases through groundbreaking research and treatment.
  • Grants for emergency and specialty care to treat pets with promising outcomes whose families cannot afford the full cost of care. Shared contributions are also made by the treating hospital and treating veterinarian.
  • Special programs such as "Ronald McDonald House"- style lodging for families whose pets are critically ill or undergoing therapies that require extended hospital stays.

Who is Frankie?

In addition to being endowed with Frankie DeBartolo's name, Frankie's Friends is endowed with the spirit and vitality of this special dog. Frankie was a beautiful greyhound who was rescued from the world of dog racing and cherished by her family. She died in 2007.

How long has Frankie's Friends been at this?

Frankie's Friends Charitable Pet Foundation, a tax exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, was founded by Dr. Neil Shaw and associates of Florida Veterinary Specialists in 1999 to help pets.

Our Commitment:
Your Donations Helping Animals

1 Cure Canine Lymphoma

Canine lymphoma is the most common form of malignant cancer in dogs. If caught and treated early, dogs can enjoy another year or two -- sometimes more -- with their families. While treatable in its early phases, it is disappointing that the treatment of canine lymphoma has been stuck for the past two decades with this limited prognosis.
Frankie's Friends is going to change that by coordinating and funding "Cure Canine Lymphoma," a national campaign of education and groundbreaking treatment for lymphoma. The three objectives of this important effort will be to

  • raise public awareness of the successful early treatment of this disease;
  • provide free or heavily discounted care for dogs enrolled in clinical programs of promising new treatments; and
  • assist with the cost for dogs whose families cannot afford treatment.

2 Cures for Pets with Catastrophic Diseases

Your gift to Frankie's Friends supports education and clinical research into other animal diseases and treatments by promoting links between the investigators seeking new answers and the large numbers of patients who would benefit from that knowledge.

3 Hope Fund: Grants for Pets and Their Families

While many charitable organizations exist to provide care for wildlife, strays, abused animals and relinquished or abandoned pets, few alternatives exist for the large number of pets from otherwise loving and responsible families who simply are unable to pay for an unexpected illness.

Your gift to Frankie's Friends Hope Fund assists families who demonstrate substantial financial need and whose pets would have a good prognosis for a quick and long-term recovery to a normal quality of life. The veterinarians who treat pets receiving Hope Fund grants and the hospitals at which the pets are being cared for also contribute financially to the pet's care.

4 Special Programs

The Guest Cottages

There is no better medicine than a familiar touch, especially if a loved one is sick and far from home. Specialized veterinary care can be a life-saver and staff offer tender and expert care. But it is not like home.

Pets' families often travel long distances to get to the hospital in order to visit just once a day.

Frankie's Friends created The Guest Cottages to fill the gap. Through the generosity of people like you, families of pets who are critically ill or who require therapies that need extended hospital stays, now may qualify for a comfortable, affordable cottage located right on the hospital grounds.

Who benefits most? It's hard to say if the sick pets benefit most from the healing power of having the companionship of those who love them, or if their family members benefit most by being close by for their beloved pets.

K-9 Down

Your donation to Frankie's Friends supports community education efforts such as K9 Down, a two-day course in advanced first aid and emergency procedures for handlers of working military, police and search/rescue dogs. K9 Down was developed to address the unique set of risks canine teams encounter in their work. While many course participants have training in human first aid and emergency life support, in the past the lives of some of these highly trained animals were lost because their human partners did not know how to correctly administer life-saving veterinary techniques.
