Externships at Our Hospitals
Florida Veterinary Specialists and NYC Veterinary Specialists welcome veterinary students to our practice to participate in an externship experience. The students are encouraged to rotate throughout the hospital during their stay and will work with the specialists, residents (in Tampa), interns, and senior emergency clinicians at all practices. Externships are up to two weeks only in duration and limited housing is available for the Tampa hospital only. The students are welcomed to attend all lectures, journal clubs, and rounds that are scheduled during their stay. Due to the structure of the program, the hospital is usually unable to provide an externship experience in one department/discipline only. Our externship experience is a wonderful exposure to a multi-disciplined referral emergency practice.
Veterinary Technology students are also welcomed at all of our hospitals as part of their school program. We are able to accommodate students in flexible schedules, as the hospitals are all open 24 hours a day. Students will work closely with our clinicians and talented staff of Certified or Licensed Veterinary Technicians and assistants.

A part of our commitment to our interns is to not only offer an intern experience that increases their theoretical knowledge base and clinical skills but to foster their future goals. We have been very successful in the past with our interns placing in residency programs all over the United States in Avian/Exotics, Cardiology, Dermatology, Infectious Disease/Public Health residency and PhD programs, Internal Medicine, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Ophthalmology, and Radiology.
Our Program
Our program combines the right professional staff, resources, caseload, and education to reach your goals. We offer Radiology Rounds (Tampa), Intern Grand Rounds, specialists lectures, Mortality/Morbidity Rounds, Emergency/Critical Care Rounds, Medicine Rounds, Surgery Rounds and residency board reviews on a regular basis, just to name a few. We have developed our program to provide an excellent balance of education and clinical experience. The schedule lets you see the cases you need to build your experience.
The intern program’s core is a series of two to four week block rotations in Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Emergency Services, Neurology, and Surgery working with some of the best specialists in the country. There are also elective rotations. When working on Emergency Services, you will be supported by working side by side with experienced emergency clinicians and specialists, but will assume primary case responsibility. The resident programs are also a series of three or four-week block rotations each specifically designed for that discipline of study as required by either the ACVECC, ABVP (avian), ACVIM (cardiology and Internal Medicine) and ACVS, respectfully.
The first week of the program is devoted to an orientation program to allow for a smooth transition into our hospital. You will meet with administrators, specialists from every department, referring veterinarians from the community and others to better acquaint you with the policies and protocols of our hospital.
All interns and residents will receive a formal certificate upon completion of their program.
