Sonja Olson, DVM

Emergency Medicine

Dr. Olson earned her B.A. in Biology, with a minor in English literature, from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1992. She went on to obtain her doctorate in veterinary medicine at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1996. Prior to and during veterinary school, Dr. Olson has had a strong interest in zoo and wildlife medicine. Initially considering a residency in zoologic medicine, Dr. Olson pursued and completed an internship at a specialty referral practice in Northern Virginia at the South Paws Veterinary Referral Hospital.

It was during the internship that Dr. Olson came to recognize her passion for emergency medicine. In 1997, she went on to practice emergency medicine/surgery on companion dogs, cats and exotics for 6 years at the Alexandria Veterinary Emergency Service in Alexandria, VA. This opportunity allowed her to mature as an emergency clinician, to volunteer her services for wildlife medical care, and to teach senior veterinary students rotating through AVES.
